If supporting Tibetan independence, why not let’s support Northern Ireland nationalist for Independence ?

Northern Ireland could not exist as an independent country, it is too small, it has to be either part of the UK or part of Ireland, and the majority of the country don't want to be part of Ireland so let's just leave it there shall we.

There's a subtle difference

After too many years of infighting it is beginning to look as though the  2 factions in Northern Ireland might be able to coexist peacefully.

That does not seem to be the case in Tibet.

The 2012 Olympics are irrelevant in this context.

put quite simply - the loyalists (terrible expression) outnumber the nationalists.

We British have been trying to do just as you ask since 1912 (see Sir Edward Carson), but some fool promised that they would remain as part of the UK, so long as they wished.

Because there has never been a demand for Northern Ireland to be independent - some people want it to be part of an all-island state, but the majority of the population want to stay part of the UK, and everyone who lives there has the right to either a British or Irish passport, or both, as they prefer.

Oh, and David d, Bunreacht na hEireann, the Irish Constitution, was written in 1937, so don't complain about people getting their history wrong!

Because there is no comapison between the two.

The people in Tibet are living under Chinese occupation with no rights or freedom.

The people of Northern Ireland live in a democracy where each citizen has the vote.  If the majority voted for independence they would be granted it.

Because the population of Northern Ireland doesn't want it.

There has never been a movement for Independence for Northern Ireland.

There has been some pressure from some groups for a united Ireland, but the majority population of Northern Ireland has always been against it.

Nationalists want to rejoin the Republic, so that we have an all-island country as set out in the Irish constitution of 1916/22.

Nationalists are and always have been a significant majority in Ulster, that's why only part of Ulster was partitioned-  to give Unionists a false majority.

So yes, I think we should support Nationalists bid to have the 6 counties join the Republic. It's best for all the people living on the Island.

younosygit, the 1937 constitution is the SecondI rish constitution. The first was worked on from 1916 and released in 1922, the second is followed on from that.

I suspect you mean unification with the Republic of Ireland rather than independence? The majority of people in northern ireland DON'T want unification, they are happy being a part of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland has moved on a lot in recent years, it is a modern, forward thinking country. Everyone in Northern ireland has equal rights, civil & religious freedoms. Discrimination is illegal & all people are as free & equal as their cousins in the south. There is absolutely no comparison with the tibet/china situation and to suggest otherwise is offensive.
