What makes you consider them fat? They are just the right shape, for such a huge creature. The layer of fatty blubber protects against cold, they have to swim in polar waters. Their flesh is lean, as any Japanese restaurateur will verify.

As for human swimmers, swim gives you lots of muscle and it improves your cardio fitness by strengthening your heart, lungs, and muscles. It uses every single muscle in your body and it's a lot harder than it looks.
