Whales aren't fat necessarily, they have insulating blubber to keep them warm in the depths of the ocean. If you've ever swam in the ocean you know how cold it can get. Now remember that it gets colder the deeper it gets that's why its so cold deep down where a lot of whales swim and why they need so much blubber to keep them warm.
