  1. I do not know what QVC is but I will guess it is a cheap goods selling program on TV.

Tanzanite is a variety of the mineral zoisite which has a blue colour (or turns blue when heated) It is rare as it is only found in one particular region of Tanzania however like all precious stones it is found in a range of qualities ranging from "total garbage" up to "super fine". Super Fine being defined as being the most superb blue without heating, high clarity and good weight and cut. The best I have had in stock to date was an amazing unheated stone of just over 48 cts. in weight and as near prefect as I have ever seen.

I do not think it takes a degree in rocket science to work out what quality range is being sold on QVC but I would not recommend buying it as an investment.

    Hope that helps a little.

  2. Well, it is rare in the sense that it is more or less only found one place in the world. However the supply from there is great enough that prices are not that high.  I'd be more surprised to see red beryl on QVC, now that is rare.
