If teeth are very loose from periodontal issues, is using a waterpik still okay?

A friend of mine has loose teeth due to letting his oral hygiene go for a year or two. He's changed his ways in the last two years, and one thing he does is use a waterpik every day to keep them extra clean, hoping to save the several loose teeth he now has. He also rinses with various things, such as Listerine, several times a day. He recently had a tooth come out while he was brushing, and had lost another one about 4 months ago. His mom's dentist told him to stop using the waterpik immediately, but other dentists he's told about his cleaning regimen haven't mentioned that it could be harmful. He really likes using the waterpik. We were hoping to hear other opinions about this. Thanks.

  1. There is no danger as long as the water pressure isn't so high that it causes his gums to bleed. Actually a waterpik is very good for getting all the plaque one cannot get with a toothbrush.
