I didn't know that and yes, it does seem a bit silly.

However I bet if you asked Diego Maradona he would have claimed it to be the hand of god ;)

That's the way it was! It's not like that anymore

because of the way National Teams felt about

winning a game so hard fought. That is why

the inception of overtime periods, PK shootouts

and stats are so important to games.
