  1. 9ers. Too many options on offense, every skill player was great, including TE and FB. Bears had maybe the most amazing D, but the 9ers defense was outstanding, too. Overshadowed by the offense, but look at some of the players they had. Chicago's offense wasn't great, 'cept for Sweetness. 9ers just more solid overall, could potentially win on both sides of the ball if the two teams were to meet.

  2. Two words - Joe Montana!

  3. The Monster's of the Midway

The 85 Bears had one of the best D's ever

and they had the greatest running back

    to ever play #34 Sweetness

  4. DA BEARS NO DOUBT ABOUT IT

  5. Well, during that time the NFC championship essentially was the superbowl, so whoever won that game would have won the Superbowl. So I have to give the question that benefit of the doubt.   If you try to define a distance between these two teams, you're splitting hairs.  There are maybe 5 teams who belong in the conversation for greatest team ever and these two are among them.  I think the 49ers would have won, but that's not a slight on the 85 Bears.  Having watched football since the '70s I have never seen a defense that terrified every offense they played like the Bears. They Stuffed Dickerson on 4th and 1 in the playoffs, they Shut out the Cowboys in Dallas. Even the Ravens D never completely intimidated everyone they played on the level of the Bears.  Having said that, If there was an offensive mind that could have figured out a way to minimize that rush and a QB that could have kept his head under the assault the Buddy Ryan's defense inflicted week in and week out on the NFL it would have been Bill Wash and Joe Montana.  Throw in receivers like Rice and Taylor and Craig out of the backfield and I think the Niners could have done some business against the Bears.   On the other side of the ball, despite having arguably the greatest rb ever in Payton, the Bears O was nothing special.  McMahon was pretty good, and Gault and Mckinnon were servicable receivers, but they were carried by the fact the D wasn't going to give up any significant points or yards.  Short fields and no pressure to score made them a lot better than they were.  The Niners could have added some pressure by scoring some points and forcing the Bears O into long drives, which they weren't particularly good at.  And the Niners had playmakers on D like Lott, Romonoski, and Haley that could have swung the game in their favor.  I see the game going 20-10 Niners, or something like that.

  6. '89 49ers

The '86 Bear defense was better in almost every way than the '85 one and the 49ers beat it.  The '89 49ers were better with basically the same offense so they could beat the '85 Bears also.

The Bears were great at applying pressure but were vulnerable to short, quick, passes with massive run after the catch like the 49ers ran which is why they quit using the 46 defense.

The big difference was that Jerry Rice became a star in '86 and he was the Bear killer.

  7. 1989 49ers. Joe Montana and Jerry Rice are a massive destruction with an explosive offense. Including Roger Craig and John Taylor as well. They were one of the best teams of their era.

  8. Bears. You could not get past that defense no matter what

  9. 1985 Bears was the best team in the NFL has ever seen ,

The most dominated team in the NFL .....

  10. 9ers. Walsh is too good of a coach.

  11. The 1972 Dolphins
