The proof is in the moon samples themselves. On Apollo 15, a rock called the genesis rock was discovered and brought back to earth. Carbon dating of the rock concluded that it was 4 billion years old, (forming about 30-50 million years after the formation of the solar system). The earth cannot harbour rocks that are that old, due to the tectonic activity of the planet, the rocks may only exist for a few hundred million years before they are recycled and melted in the mantle once again. But the genesis rock had laid undisturbed, as the moon has no tectonic activity.

Therefore, the genesis rock is proof that the rock is from the moon, and that somebody had to get it from there.

The rock samples could come from Earth, many meteorites land on the planet everyday, some of them are from the moon. Or they could have used samples from earlier probes, or the could have used any rock and said it came from the moon, pretty easy to do as theres no one to check. (And those that are high enough to check would be in on the hoax anyway)

i would think this is the wrong question to ask in this category. the Moon landing was real therefore why would we have to explain how it was faked. i'm sorry but i do not understand the reasoning behind your question.

The clear answer is that they aren't fake, and that they were brought back as claimed from the Moon.

Conspiracy theorists don't have a good explanation for where the rocks came from, but that doesn't stop them from offering some entertaining hypotheses:

1. They're just ordinary rocks.  Conspiracists claim that geologists wouldn't know a Moon rock if they saw one, so hoaxsters can just substitute ordinary rocks.  This claim ignores most of what geology studies.

2. They are ordinary rocks doctored in some way.  Theories range from "baking them in a radiation oven," to "putting them in an ordinary microwave."  Essentially this argues that there exists a magical Moon-rock Faking Machine.  Pretty desperate, and doesn't specify anything that geologists wouldn't be able to spot.

3. They're "lunites" -- meteorites knocked away from the Moon by impacts and landed on Earth in Antarctica.  The problem is that the surface of the Apollo samples looks like rocks that have sat in space for billions of years, while lunites' surfaces look like rocks that have sat on Earth for billions of years.  And lunites were discovered until the 1970s, long after Apollo.  They were discovered, in fact, by their similarity to the Apollo samples.  Conspiracists say that Von Braun picked up lunites in the late 1960s on his vacation in Antarctica.  But why would you send a rocket engineer to get rocks?

4. They're actual Moon rocks picked up by an automated lander.  The Soviets got about a pound of Moon material that way in the 1970s.  But the Apollo samples are too highly differentiated and too voluminous to have been obtained that way.  If the U.S. secretly developed an automated lander to do this that was as capable as the Soviets, there would have to be a successful sample-retrieval mission about every 3-4 DAYS during 1969-1972 to produce all the 880 pounds of samples we have.

As you can see, the explanations are pretty far-fetched.  No qualified geologists believes that the Apollo samples are anything other than actual Moon rocks picked up by human astronauts.

No one in America has been "kept in the dark" about Soviet lunar exploration.  Just very few people choose to study Soviet lunar exploration.  The information has been there since the 1970s available for anyone to find.

Exactly. This is one of the multiple pieces of evidence that prove we did, in fact, land on the moon. But this piece of evidence isn't nearly as exemplary as the laser reflectors we left on the moon. Because the moon is terrestrial, like the Earth, I suppose we could possible find these rocks on Earth... highly unlikely because I haven't seen any rocks like them, but then again, I haven't studied rocks that much. But don't get me wrong, the 300+ kilograms of moon rocks did much to prove we went to the moon. But the laser reflectors are the key piece of evidence. Astronomers use them to this day to calculate the position of the moon. These had to have been put on the moon by humans because rover technology simply didn't exist then.

i don't know about the moon rocks but i was reading some of the answers and i have to say the landing of the moon was totally fake have you ever seen pictures of space and of the moon the sky is filled with billions of stars but on the landing of the moon clips the sky is pitch black!!!   you mean to tell me that you can have a reasonable explanation to why the photos can show all the stars of the american flag but not capture the billions in the background and of how the video missed the the stars as well other then it was a hoax then reply to this plz

I know you have the best of intentions here, but I and many others who visit this site to impart a little knowledge about space to people who often know ver little, are sick of hearing moon landings associated with the words “fake” or “hoax”.

The 6 moon landings are as much a part of history as are now the Beijing Olympics.

It is as silly to call the moon landings fake as it would be silly to think the Chinese faked the olympics – in both cases hundreds of thousands of people were involved in making them a success.

Let’s not hear these words again, even if you are trying to appeal to those stupid enough to believe these more than stupid conspiracy theories.

If the landings were faked, the moon samples could have come from an earlier probe mission. Those samples would have been kept secret for the purpose of faking the moon landings.
