we can only measure what happened a second or too after the big bang, therefore we can't really be sure(at this point) that it really was the beginning of the universe. be that as it may the big bang theory makes no comment about what started the big bang, just the events which happened after the initial "spark" as you say.

should be noted that the big bang wasn't an explosion, it is the expansion of universe.

well considering our physics dont work at any lengths smaller than planck length (1.61625281 x 10^-35 meters), we cant tell what happened directly after the big bang, or what caused it.

Your question implies that something existed before the Big Bang.  There wasn't anything.  The universe is a self-contained phenomenon.

The theory describes the How, not the Why. Modern science does not yet have all the answers, we shouldn't pretend that we do.. there are many unknowns and we do not know what it was that brought everything into existence, can't yet know what caused the Big Bang. "imagination is more important than knowledge"; there is a tendency in science as well as in religion to be closed to concepts that seem outlandish in comparison to the status quo (at one point, like the earth being round or the sun orbiting the Earth.)  both sides would do well to be more open to new concepts. it is not a matter of religion vs science; we are  all searching for meaning and explanation, and in that sense, science is deeply spiritual. I know I've gone on and on, sorry.  hope that helps
