  1. There is no purpose that it could serve in the commercial market that could not be better served by something else.

  2. The Bell-Boeing 609 was proposed as a civilian tiltrotor, but it's too expensive.  The V-22 is a VERY expensive vehicle and would not be viable commercially.

  3. This concept has been tried before in the UK. An aircraft called the Fairey Rotodyne had short wings, with a turboprop engine on each, and a large rotor mounted as it would be on a helicopter. It was designed for low volume, quiet passenger transit but did not prove to be popular and was phased out. A bit ahead of its time, perhaps.

  4. There have been news article in different magazines for years about a possible civilian passenger version of the CV-22 that could take off from the tops of buildings in the inner cities and thus save that trip to the airport.  We could see one flying within a few years although I haven't read anything lately about it.

  5. The CV-22 will likely not be used in civilian markets because of it's expense. It's also a little too small for most cargo jobs and a little too big for an executive transport. Bell has done work on a smaller civilian transport based on the CV-22 Osprey, but it isn't a viable production right now because of cost. For the same price, you could buy a jet and travel twice as fast. However, Bell is pursuing ongoing development to reduce costs and produce a lower cost derivative to market to civilian enterprise. Eventually, I'm sure we'll see tiltrotor executive transports and possibly civil cargo tiltrotors, but not until the technologies involved become less expensive.

  6. It will be niether a military or commercial success.
