Keeping animals in your home as a pet is an absurd concept to most chinese. The only exception is typically Koi. Koi (goldfish) are a long time honored tradition as pets in China. (and practically every chinese restaurant in North America.

It was illegal to keep pets at all in China 25 years ago.. Crazy huh?

Dogs less then 14 inches tall are now legal, but the fees to keep them are more then most people make in a year..

It really makes eating dogs make a lot more sense. Heck, you're talking about a nation of people that are not raised around pets and aren't allowed to own them. No wonder they don't have any kind of appreciation for animal life, they never get to experience it close up.
