Some guy wrote the dead sea scrolls influenced by god as the story goes, but what if he had written that there is no god, along with a bunch of stories inspired by his imaginary friend would people believe in his imaginary friend? Just wondering, not to offend anyone. I am uneducated on this topic.

  1. It would depend a lot on how persuasively it was written.

Many people adopt a religion because it speaks to them.  It makes them feel good.  They feel it describes something about the universe.

As such there are actually any number of COMPLETELY FICTIONAL religions that were rather obviously meant by their authors to be such but are nonetheless adopted by fans and followed like any other actual religion.

Two recent examples I would cite of that are Star Wars spawning the Jedi religion (and yes, there are people who actually try and carry Jedi notions forward as a comprehensive religion) and Stranger In a Strange Land leading to an actual Church of All Worlds as portrayed in the book.

Both were founded in the last fifty years and still exist... who knows how prevalent they'll be a thousand years from now, neh?

  2. There probably would be a religion based on it.  Just read about how the Mormon church was started.  And of course the best example would be L. Ron Hubbard and the Sociologists.  He proved that a religion could be started by just writing a book.  And not even a really good one, more like a script for a SciFi Channel movie.

  3. Many people form groups based upon a particular belief. Their writings may or may not reflect truth. There are people which will believe almost anything. We've seen a few cults self destruct for their strong beliefs. The view that there is a Creator is reasonable when you consider life in all its sophisticated variety spontaneously popping up from nothing in the relatively short time that it has been around. Evolution makes sense, but only with a guiding hand.
