If the Israeli Galil rifle is so good, why are the Israelis leaving it?

I'm wondering why? Many retired special forces guys I have talked about have told me that if they could choose between an M-16 and a Israeli Galil, that they would use the Galil. If the Galil is so good, why are the Israelis choosing the Tavor and the M4 carbines over them?

  1. For the same reason the military left the M1 and opted for the M16...something better came along that met the needs of the armed forces better.

  2. The Galil is a great rifle and probably one of the best AK based rifles (up there with the Valmets), but, they are a bit overweight campared to the M4. They dont have the versatility and modular capability of the M4 either, such as optics, laser and light mounts, ect. Or as easily adaptable anyway.

Throw in the fact that Uncle Sam is probably cutting them a great deal and an endless supply of parts and its easy to understand why they are using M4's.

If just needed a bone stock rifle I would take the Galil also FWIW.

  3. so they can have STANAG compatible rifles. the M4 and Tavor are both light and more accurate by virtue of their designs. they wouldn't be switching if they were not better rifles.

  4. For the M4 it is a matter of cost.  The M4 cost less to produce.  IIRC, the Tavor and the M4 uses the same magazine (and same cartridge) thus taking the Galil out service makes logistics easier.
