Question:

If the Phillies got Matt Holliday do they improve their chances of going to the World Series?

I always thought that pitching and defense won championships. Clearly the Phillies pitching staff is not that stellar. Would they be able to take down a team like the Cubs, Brewers or Dbacks in the playoffs, all teams who have far better pitching then the Phillies.

  1. Any contender would have a better chance of winning with Holliday on their team since he is one of the premier players in MLB.

  2. hellz yea but they still have pat burrel i hope the mets get him

  3. getting matt holiday would help us dearly. i hope we can get him

  4. Obviously it would.  Anytime you can get a player like Matt you improve your chances to win the World Series.

  5. It gives them a boost offensively, but they need to improve a bit as far as pitching.  Even with Holliday, they have no chance against the Cubs or Cardinals.  If they win the NL East, they'll play whoever wins Wild Card since it will come out of the Central.  They can't rely on a 45 year old Jamie Moyer.

  6. It would improve their chances, but not much. Their offense is already very good. They need a better rotation. The move wouldn't make any sense to me. This is the strategy (good offense, poor pitching) that the Rangers have used for years, and where has it gotten them?

  7. Well it would help offensively, but the Phillies already have the best offense in the NL with Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, and Pat Burrel. They also lead the league in homers and runs scored. The Phillies really need pitching a lot more than offense to compete so I would go after a starter instead of Holliday.

  8. If a team doesn't have pitching, they will collapse in post-season play. Offense can get you to the post-season, but it won't get you through it.

  9. Tell me, does Matt Holliday, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins sound like a championship team to you. Cause iit does to me.

  10. It would definitely help the batting for the Phils. Offense is only half of the game though, and their pitching hasn't been the greatest lately. It wouldn't be a bad move on their part to get a pitcher too.

  11. I dont know why every team wants matt holliday, im a cardinals fan and i feel queezy everytime someone thinks the cards should trade for him.  look at his stats outside of coors everybody (5 hrs, 14 rbis in 40 games this year, he has more strikeouts on the road than rbis in each of the last 4 )!!! years they are simply average, and definitely not worth the money he will command and teh players the rockies would command to get him.
