What happens to the monarchy? I thought it owed a great deal of its legitimacy to the fact that it united the crowns of Scotland and England.

By the way, I think breaking up the United Kingdom or getting rid of the monarchy would be really bad ideas.

  1. The Crowns united way before the countries did. James VI and I was the first Joint monarch but it was his great-grandaughter who united the Countries over a century after he came to the throne in 1707.

Therefore if Scotalnd di become independent it would in all likelihood retain the monarchy.

  2. let the scots have their independance, then throw all the scots out of england and while your at it rebiuld hadrians wall, lets face it besides the kilt and haggis there's not much else for them to offer, give it 3 months and they would be back with cap in hand begging to be part of britain,

  3. Queen of England

    Queen of Scots

The 2 positions have coexisted for 400 years.......in the same person

  4. The Scottish Nationalist Party, which favors abolishing the monarchy in Scotland, lost all its 6 seats in the 2007 elections to the Scottish Parliament.  Many Scottish Nationalists, including Alexander Salmond, support retaining Queen Elizabeth as the current monarch with Scotland becoming a member of the Commonwealth similar to Canada or Australia.

  5. There have been larger, much larger, unions and secession  in the world, so it's a very real possibility.  I've always heard the monarchy referred to as the British Crown or the Queen of England, but not really anything related to the U.K.
