Question:

If the US had never waged economic war against Cuba?

How would Cuba have been today if there had not been half a century of American embargo and blockades? Fidel gets a bit of a slating at times for the economic poverty of Cuba but no one ever mentions the economic warfare against Cuba waged by the US inspite of UN votes against it! I suppose at least Cuba does not have to worry about the credit crunch.... Anyway, what are your honest opinions about this?

PS Please, sensible answers not a load of loudmouthed pro-US rhetoric (as has happened before).

  1. america has been trying to take over cuba since the spanish american war. they cannot face the fact that cuba will not be the next hawaii or puerto rico. america should mind its own business and focus on the war of poverty in america. How does america have money for wars but cant feed its poor.

  2. Cuba can trade with any country in the world other than the US so your saying the US is the sole provider of everything lol give me a break also I'm half Cuban my dad left in 62 from the War of the Bandits(look it up) i part of the right wing minority of Cubans that support the US BTW Barry i could not have said it better myself all of what you said is the truth Thank you and EMJAY he should get the best answer

  3. I am told that up until the 1990s, life in Cuba was not bad - thanks to the Russian subsidies. It is only after that that the US embargo began to bite.

In the "special period in peacetime", the suffering of the Cuban people was made worse by the embargo.

Cuba now is enjoying subsidies from Venezuela, which help.

    PS re the other responses:

    1) Cuba offered to discuss compensation, and every other country in the world came to agreements. Only the US refused to talk.

    2) Cuba can trade with every other country ? But most multi-nationals are wary of trading with Cuba in case it affects their US business. UBS (a Swiss bank) were fined by the US for trading with Cuba.

  4. No,  the US property I refer to below did not include brothels, etc. or organized crime operations.  It was property belonging to corporations like AT&T and the United Fruit Company.

That Cuba escaped most of the consequences of being an outlaw state until the 1990s (when the USSR fell and the subsidies for Cuba ended) does not change the fact they were and still are an outlaw state.

    --------------------------------------...

The basic assumption of your question is that America's economic sanctions were/are somehow unjustified and should have never been enacted or enforced.

Fidel Castro's Cuba "nationalized without compensation" many Billions worth of US assets. In short, Cuba STOLE the property and has NEVER compensated the victims of the armed-robbery-on-a-grand-scale.

Then there is the small issue of Cuba hosting Soviet ICBMs on its territory so a successful first-strike could be launched against the USA.

Your question should be "If Cuba had never waged economic war against the USA? How would Cuba have been today if it had not been an outlaw state for half a century?".

That is reality, and ONLY the concern a US invasion of Soviet-sponsored Communist Cuba would trigger a nuclear war allowed the gang of thugs to remain in power on Cuba.

If you want a "cause" to promote maybe you should support freedom for Tibet.  Oh golly, China is also Communist!  Mustn't criticize a "progressive" nation that is just trying to provide the glories of Socialism to a neighbor.........
