I send last monday July 14 a letter with a check to IRS and I send it certified. As of today the letter has not been delivered yet. I send it from Florida to the IRS in georgia (the adreess could not be wrong because I send it with its original return envelop) If the USPS lost my letter and I have to place an stop payment and pay fines to the IRS because I did not comply on time.... should I ask for this money to the USPS??? I mean they lost my mail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what should I do?????

  1. It is probably there. Some people are just lazy. It's laying on somebody's desk.

  2. You suppose to have a tracking nos form them if not give them a call but you should not let it rest.

  3. The actual liability is limited to the insured, ACTUAL value of the contents of the letter/package.

In other words, if you sent a pair of earrings worth $20 and insured them, the most you could get back would be the postage and the $20 for the earrings. You would not be compensated for the time and effort it took to buy the earrings.

In your case, you will be eligible to receive a refund on your postage as you can prove that USPS did not provide the service for which it was paid. All other expenses will be your responsibility.

Another interesting catch is the amount of time that the postal service allows itself to make delivery before it accepts the fact that your mailing is not going to show up. In the case of insured, first class mail with tracking, we were made to wait THIRTY DAYS before the postal service would officially declare a package missing and eligible for a claim. It would not surprise me to find a similar time frame is allowed for registered mail gone missing.

On the bright side, your receipt should be enough to help you avoid fines and fees with the IRS as you do have proof of mailing.

  4. Contact the USPS and ask when the letter was delivered.  They should be able to give you the date.  If it hasn't been delivered yet, they should also tell you that and you could ask them why.  Don't be nasty.  That never helps.  Just tell them you need some help tracking the letter.  They will need the number from the certification tag.  I think you can also check from the USPS web site and find the status of the letter.  Go to the web site below and enter the number.

  5. How do you know that the letter has not been delivered? You can not track a Certified Letter online at usps.com hopwever, we can look it up on our Intranet Track & Confirm.

If, in fact, your letter was delayed, the IRS goes by the Postmark, not the day they receive it, unlike Credit Card Companies. If it is lost, that is a different story. Your Receipt for Certified Mail only will prove that you mailed "something" to the IRS, not waht was mailed.

If you would provide the number from your Receipt for Certified Mail, I will look up the number for you.

  6. The volume of mail received by the IRS is phenomenal , I would give it another week or so , the USPS rarely loses mail ...
