  1. When the Pens win the cup it will be the start of a dynasty.

  2. I would say no.  They have had a lot of success in the last 10-11 years but the personnel has changed.  When I think of a dynasty I think of the 49ers in the Rice-Montana-Young years where the core of the team doesn't change significantly.  The key players have changes considerably at Detroit, and even if they were still there I dont thing they have won enough cups fast enough and been dominant enough to be a dynasty.  Just a good consistent Hockey team.

  3. well, 4 cups in 10 playable years is more than any other franchise since the oilers won their 5th, in 7 years cumulating in 89-90.

so define it however you want, but detroit is the closest thing to it within the last 20 years or so. NJ won 3 in 9 years, and next closest is Colorado w/ 2 in 6 years. sounds to me then, by today's standards that Detroit is. and my $$ is on that they'll be in the playoffs again next year; for their 18th straight year.

STOP COMPARING OTHER SPORTS. stop making comparisons from the 50s, 60s, 70, and 80s of hockey. it's TODAY!

besides, the 49ers wouldn't be a dynasty, because they had a different QB than when they started, as when they won their last super bowl. THAT's how your logic sounds. weak.

  4. The Wings won three cups in 6 years (97,98,02)  and are on the cusp of  a fourth in 11. They have also been in the playoffs for more consecutive years than any team in pro-sports today. In that time they have also won a great number of Presidents trophies, and managed to flouirsh both with and without the salary cap. I thinks its safe to say that the Red Wings of the mid-nineties to present are a dynasty.

  5. No. And wings are not as close as they can get.

You say because theres free agents and salary cap..

Look at football... the patriots are a dynasty right now. Football has sallary caps.

h**l the red s*x are near a dynasty level.

i think dynasty is 3 or more championships in a 5 year time span.

  6. What the others said. The Wings are as close as you can get these days of free agency and salary caps. They have been in the forefront of the game for over 10 years.

Ben - 4 of the last 10 Cups (provided they win this one of course), that hardly qualifies for "only a few overall championships". That's 40%

iceman - you've got to be kidding. The Pats haven't done any more than the Wings have. And it will take MANY more years before the Red Sox can be declared a dynasty. They won their 1st WS in I don't remember how many years, then didn't even make the playoffs the next year.???

  7. They are the closest thing to a dynasty in todays hockey.

What is a REAL dynasty anyway? 4 Stanley cups in 5 years or something? I think its something along those lines.

That is pretty much impossible in todays NHL.

@ Domski - even IF the pens somehow manage to win the cup this year, I believe they are the next Tampa Bay Lightning. They won the cup in 2004, and then look what happened. They still have Lecavalier and St. Louis, but all their other players left. The Penguins will still have Crosby and Malkin, but they have a BUTTload of free agents that there is NO WAY they willl be able to get to stick around.

  8. They are the closest thing to it that we will ever see.

    But its not over yet!!!!

    GO PENS!

  9. They already are a dynasty.

  10. Haven't they always pretty much been a dynasty?

  11. they'll be a dynasty the same way the Atlanta braves were a dynasty, lots of playoffs and division championships, but only a few overall championships

Tom-yeah, good point. But the last few years they have been great but havent won it all. And the other cups came with federov, Yeserman(sp?), and Shanahan, so I was speaking more to this newer group of players.

  12. They don't really compare to the Islanders, Oilers, and Canadiens teams that would win 4-5 in a row, but (quite possibly) 4 cups spread out over 10 years, with several President's Cups is pretty dominant.

  13. Wings have pretty much been a dynasty for the past 10 years.LOL

Yes,in my opinion they will be called a dynasty if they win the cup.
