  1. the area of a triangle is 1/2 base x height

    we know this trainge has a base of x and an area of x²

    therefore we have 1/2 times x times height = x²

    divide both sides by x

    1/2 times the height = x

    mulitply both sides by 2

    height = 2x

  2. area of base of triangle+area of base of square

    x+x=2x.

  3. Well the triangle and the square have equal areas.

    The base of the triangle is x and the height (altitude) is unkwown, so i'll call it A.

    The area of a triangle  = (1/2)(b)(h)

    Area = (1/2)(x)(A)

    The square has a side length of x

    Area of a square = s^2 (where s is the side length of the square)

    Area = x^2

    Since the two areas are equal, set them equal to each other and solve for the altitude, A.

    (1/2)(x)(A) = x^2  divide both sides by x

    (1/2)(A) = x^2/x  (x^2/x = x)

    (1/2)(A) = x  multiply both sides by 2 to get rid of 1/2

    A = 2x

    Voila, the altitude is 2x
