If the chinese gymnasts broke the rules of underage competition, why didn't they reprimand 14-yo Thomas Daley?

The age requirements are different for each sport. The ruling federations for each sport set the age limits, so there are 14 year-old divers and 15 year-old swimmers, and that is perfectly legal.

The age limit in gymnastics is 16.  That doesn't mean the age limit is 16 for every event.  The risk of injury in diving is significantly less for younger competitors, therefore the required age is lower.

Thomas Daley is a diver, not a gymnast.  Since gymnastics is physically demanding, what with the hard impact on the feet from landing and risk of falling and getting seriously injured, as well as the pressure to stay thin, the FIG decided that it would be best if girls not turning 16 during the competition year not compete at a senior level to minimize practice hours for still-developing girls.

Long and complicated and slightly unnessecary, I know, but that's the way it is.

I think all sports doesn't need age limits...it's stupid. If the don't have those age limits; the stupid c**p of under-aged girls wouldn't be even an issue.

the age limit is only for gymnastics.  it was put in place so the younger gymnasts wouldnt push themselves too hard, too young and get hurt

There is no advantage to a kid diving at a younger age, but I think 14 is too young to do it as well.

The gymnast has an advantage at a younger age, they need to enforce the rule if it exisits. Produce the mother's marriage certificate, or the doctor's records.

Is it really true about the Chinese gymnasts? Or is just just speculation (and perhpas bitter jealousy)? Just because they LOOK really young doesn't mean they are.
