If the circuit is open, where does electricity go to since current cannot pass through the switch?

My 11-year cousin asks me but I don't know how to answer so I said it gets discharged to the surroundings, probably something to do with the ions. Sounds lame but I've no better explanation.

Can any Science teacher or expert provide with a scientifically-sound explanation? Thanks.

  1. The current just stops, just as if you were to remove a section water pipe and cap the ends. The electricity doesn't go anywhere, It sits there and waits for the circuit to close in order to move again.

  2. Electricity needs a complete circuit in order to flow. Without that it's still in the wire, but doesn't flow anywhere. Similar to water in a pipe that doesn't flow when the pipe is closed.
