It does still go on today. If the shrinking of the middle class goes to the extreem then there will be only the very rich and the very poor in exsistance. Many of the poor would not survive even if the rich where taxed to help the poor with goverment handouts.

Being lower-middle I will survive; but not because I am fit but because my rich father would take care of me.
