shouldn't we be walking, driving, and running up, down, and side way instead of N, S, E, W.

  1. You have to first remember how incredibly small we are:

Imagine every man, woman and child from every continent on Earth is gathered to the U.S. east coast. ALL 6.684 billion of us. If each man woman and child was then evenly spaced with 10 square feet surrounding each person, we would ALL pretty much fit into the second smallest U.S. state, Delaware.

Now look at how small Delaware (colored red) is compared to the U.S.:

Now look at how relatively small the U.S. is to the rest of the world:

Now check out this real flyover of Earth and how huge it is to us:

Because of this, we cannot see the curvature of the Earth even when looking out at the horizon of the ocean, the largest truly "smooth" area on Earth

You then have to remember that the Earth's land surface is in no way even or smooth, even on the flattest plateaus and plains. The Earth's surface is bumpy, uneven, mountainous, sloped, scarred with basins, etc... With all of these landforms, our eyes perceive and construct your visual world the best it can. Our visual orientation can be so easily deceived, as we can even lead ourselves to believe certain areas of the Earth have objects rolling uphill! : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_hil...

You then have to finally remember how we orient ourselves in a universe that really has no clear, standard orientation. If you imagine yourself floating around in deep space just looking around the solar system from afar, or at other galaxies from a distance, you would have absolutely no sense of up and down, what galaxies are "upside down", etc..

This is simply because there is no detectable gravity in deep space. We and every other animal/plant on Earth are creatures that base our spatial senses on the pull of gravity and the push of the ground back up on us. This is why we don't feel upside down on rollercoaster loopdloops, as the seat pushes back up on you during the loop. This is also why you would have no clue what being upside down feels like in weightless deep space.

Because gravity pulls you downward anywhere on the rounded Earth, "up" is always towards the sky and never toward to north pole, as you suggest we should be sensing on a round Earth. Side to side is then always based on the magnetic poles, (with the help of a compass) on our perceived "flat" visual-world.

Hope this all helps you justify a round earth without childishly bashing the Flat Earth Society too much : )

  2. The Earth is actually flat.  And if we destroy the environment and start enough wars Jesus will come back and save us.  And UFO's and astrology are real too, and Nostradamus AND the Mayans said the world is going to end in 2012.

So actually - there's no reason to do anything but vote for McCain now!

  3. we are much smaller than the earth, hence it seems flat, also many people refer to south as down.
