  1. the city of chicago was said to be "the city that worked."  that was its reputation when richard j. daley, who is now dead and whose son has succeeded the throne, was the mayor and long after he left office.

if you were anywhere in the usa and you wanted a job, you'd know to head to chicago, IL, where for sure there was SOME job that you could fill.

but not anymore.  beautiful chicago, its unique, interesting skyscrapers gleaming in the sunlight as a result of downtown chicago sitting at the lakefront (sidney is almost as wondrous, but not quite, chicago has the best skyline in the world) has become the 'city that taxes you to death.'  when that began, most of the industrial base of chicago simply upped and left.  they first moved to chicago's suburbs, where the taxes were less, and then, thank you to the enviros, their companies were closed due to the expenses of EPA inspections and conformance.  losing your industrial base, anywhere, isn't good for employment.  so many other jobs are tied into industry.

so now the new, younger daley, quite the yuppie, has allowed for chicago to become the 'land of condomania' for suburbanite yuppies that wanted "diversity," (only possible when you have the industrial base that supports so many other industries), but who refuse to go anywhere outside of their condo developments unless it is to go to their garage to get in the car to go to their cubicle jobs downtown, IF they are not laid off because of the loss of industry.  because, how can people "manage" companies that have folded or have moved their operations to the orient, where the EPA is not all powerful?

i see dejected chicagoans all over the place.  i see more and more and more people at home every day, not going to a job.  they are living off of their savings that had been meant for their old age.  i hear complaints constantly, in my field, of fear of loss of the family house--real estate and everything that is attached to the development of it makes up a full third of our GDP--because they were marginal buyers when the purchased their homes on subprime loans, and one or both the workers in the house have been laid off from their jobs.

illinois has discussed, within the past 6 months, a plan to extend the unemployment benefits.  they are now given for 26 weeks.  there is talk of doubling the number of weeks that laid off workers can get that money, which is a pittance compared to their last paycheck.

chicago's cost of living is among the highest in the country, and mr. daley and the head of the cook country board (where chicago is located), mr. stroger, just raised the sales tax to 10.25%, the highest anywhere in the usa.  our own people, my neighbors, go out of county to avoid paying such an exorbitant rate.  so the plan is backfiring on daley and stroger.

daley only wants the olympics to come into chicago and cares nothing about the quality of life that chicagoans should be given for the taxes they pay.  that is why daley's chums at city hall always vote his way, for ridiculous architectural projects to be built that always go into cost overruns.  they are paid by withholding raises made by workers of the city, along with the interest that accrues on that money, for up to two years, while daley collects evermore taxes to fund his grandiose plans for the olympics to be in chicago.  but the workers that do go downtown to their cubicles cannot even sit down on the el trains or buses, because their services have been cut to pay for more architectural monstrosities that daley tries to use to entice the olympics into chicago.

now then, since the infrastructure of chicago is going down the tubes, as well as the employment rate (people cannot buy so many things and pay taxes on them if they are not working, can they?), why would the olympics choose to hold games in chicago?  all the wondrous skyscrapers in chicago will become ghost buildings since the business base of chicago has been lost along with industry.
