If the force exerted by the fish line on the tip of the rod is 4.0 N, what force must the fisherman exert in the direction and in the location shown in the figure below? Ignore the rod's mass, and assume the rod is pivoted in the fisherman's other hand.

Answer: 20N

  2. Dissolve the force,F2 into the direction perpendicular with the rod, we get F2sin30. To balance up the force exerted by the fish, the resultant torque(force x perpendicular distance) around the pivoted rod holder must be zero. Hence F2cos30(1.0m) = F1(2.5m)

    =>F2 = (4.0)(2.5)/(1.0)(0.5)=20N #
