guilt, shame, love, hate........

apart from fear being necessary, so we could avoid sabre toothed tigers, why were the other emotions necessary for our more simple ancestors?

  1. probably comes from the fear of being eaten.

  2. guilt, shame etc are to give us morals, without these we wouldn't know something we do is wrong, stops most of us going round and knicking food from our neighbours caves.

Love is obvious, helps us to keep the human race going.

Hate is one of those rogue emotions of no use but we just have it

  3. Because we are pack animals.  Animals that live in packs generally are more emotionally complex than solitary animals.

  4. FOR SURVIVAL

  5. For much the same reason they're just as necessary for virtually all social organisms.  And yes, if you but look at them, you'll realize that all social organisms appear to have corresponding emotions to our own.  These things are what make a species social or non-social.  Truly "simple" organisms are anti-social.  Our so-called "simple" ancestors weren't as simple as you think, just as most social animals on the world today aren't nearly as simple as your question would seem to imply.  We have more peers on this world than modern humanity will ever realize, and it's a crying shame for both us and for them.

  6. fear may stop you being hunted ,gathered and eaten.

  7. Probably the same reason that they are necessary now.

They would have felt guilt for killing the sabre tooth and leaving perhaps, a family without it's parent/sibling. The may have felt shame for walking around in that ridiculous get-up. And quite possibly hated their neighbours for having a bigger/more comfy/trendier cave than they did.

  8. I see my dogs display these emotions; at least I think.  They're very sharp creatures, so they may just be immitating me.  Emotions help us protect ourselves and eachother, as well as giving us a motivation to do so.  Often an emotion can be the cause of an action and that action's result can cause an emotion.  It's kind of circular.

  9. Guilt, shame, love, hate, are the instincts that allow us to function as social animals.

Love makes us work better with others, because we want them to be happy with us.

Guilt and shame are there to discourage us from antisocial behavior.

Hate enhances group cohesion in the face of a common threat.

  10. hunting and gathering was the obvious fear you guessed it. it keeps people from doing stupid things. Guilt and shame go together because since the beginning of time women have guilted us into doing the hunting and gathering which brings shame if we dont do it and makes men feel bad because they didnt. Love and hate go together they give us drive and determination jealous was passed on through material possessions which really didnt come along until later rage was a way of expressing deep hatred but now its changed to an expression of ignorance. I hope i helped

  11. Its because your premise is wrong to start with! Humans are not one of hunting & gathering, we are a trade based social specie... Which is a way over all other species...

It is because of trades that all those acting traits have emerged. While some are remnants of our way of life, as a survival instinct...

  12. The reason for having the emotion of 'fear.'

It keeps you away from (if you have any sense) DANGER, like pubs n f**s, women, fast cars, jumping out of planes and or course wome - Oh, sorry, sabre toothed tigers.

As for the rest, see Episode 2 next week.

    Sash.

  13. Guilt, shame, love, and hate are beneficial to the group.  Fear stops us from doing something dangerous.  Simple.

  14. The lower / older part of the brain, sometimes referred to as the reptilian brain, has four main ways of reacting to stressful or dangerous situations. These are: fight, flight, flock and freeze. This is the same part of the brain which causes certain physical reactions to stressful situations.

The more evolved section of the brain allows us to overide these instinctive reactions and make logical decisions. Other emotions such as love and hate have probably developed because of family and social relationships which are necessary for the survival of the human race. For example we need to care for our children and feel affection towards the partners with whom we choose to have children.

  15. its not known that our ancestors had the ability to feel love etc. i don't think they would have in my opinion it would have been more primal. fear for self preservation and instead of hate i think it would be more like territorial aggression, defending the right to mate similar to more primitive animals of today like monkeys or gorillas.
