  1. *Yawns* They aren't. That practice is no longer a legal necessity. Thanks for playing, you just failed.

  2. Most of your answers have it right, we can just affirm.

                                        Just a little point here.

I am atheist, I am glad to see you have mentioned the fact that a 'minority' of atheists want to eliminate God and prayer!

I don't believe in God , that's about all we atheists have in common, except of course that we also do not believe in any religion that worships  this non existent God.

I don't have any objection at all to folk that need to believe in a God, it maybe gives them comfort, no harm to me!

If they feel a need to talk to their God, OK no problem, they don't need to be instructed on how to do that by teachers and 'true ' religions do they?

I really do hate all religions, that is the thing that needs to be banned, religion! All religion.

  3. your wrong.

  4. Erm, they don't use the Bible.

  5. They aren't.

  6. We don't swear on the bible in courts in the United States anymore...

  7. Hello. Welcome to 2008. Bibles aren't required anymore.

Atheists don't want to 'eliminate God or prayer', they want the freedom to be an atheist. They don't want to be forced to engage in any Christian-related stuff (like mandatory school prayer, Biblical creation taught in classrooms, etc)

  8. When was the last time you were in court?  Nobody swears on a Bible anymore, unless they wish to.

I think you need to appreciate that no atheist wishes to change your religious views.  We don't seek out converts, they seek us out.  We have absolutely no desire to cause you emotional or spiritual pain.

I have only two desires, regarding Christians:

1.)  America must continue to remain a secular democracy, as originally founded.  I'm willing to shed blood over this issue and willing to burn traitorous churches to the ground -- so, unless you wish to provoke a bloody revolution, keep your superstitious hands off the US Constitution.

2.)  I am very, very tired of dealing with superstitious fools who imagine their precious "faith" gives them license to relentlessly hassle me about their imaginary God.  If you leave me alone to enjoy my non-belief, I will not attack you for your beliefs.  As long as you imagine your God gives you the right to make my life miserable with relentless proselytizing and endless threats of eternal torture, I will fight you with all my strength and spit in your face with my dying breath, for spite's sake.  If and when I should ever wish to convert, I give my word I will seek out a "real" Christian to help me do it.  Until then, please allow me the simple dignity of having my own opinions.

  9. Who knows. The Atheists are a minority, until they become a majority no one will take them seriously.

  10. When I had jury duty a couple of years ago, no one swore on a Bible, and they were allowed to "swear or affirm".

So, does the multitude of answers saying you're data's wrong prove atheists are bit paranoid and their facts are way off? They stopped hanging witches in Salem too (and even that was due to ergotism).

<edit> And there's no prayer in school, and no public school tecahes creationism. When I went to school in the 70's in 80's in the south, we were only taught Evolution, and there was no manditory prayer. What you guys need to do is go immigrate to Saudi Arabia and find out what it's like to have no choice in religious belief, then maybe you'll finally get it.

  11. Americans no longer swear on the Bible. They simply "affirm" that what they are about to say is the truth, period. No more " so help me God." That's secularism at its finest.

  12. In those places where courts still get people to swear on a bible, it is also acceptable to make an affirmation instead.

  13. You can use whatever book you want... bible, koran, torah, or sports illustrated.  Separation of church & state is alive and well.

  14. I don't think they do that any more.

  15. Too much Matlock?

  16. atheists are all wrong. WOO GOD!!!!!

  17. Gee, it's almost like the majority of atheists don't want to eliminate god, prayer, and public displays of religious things.

Prayer isn't forced on children in school, government money isn't used for religious displays, and we have substitute practices for people for whom swearing on the Bible has no significance. Is that what you were talking about?

  18. Are you still living in 1950?

They don't do that anymore. You just swear to tell the truth.

  19. Laws governing oaths permit people to solemnify their statements by a number of outward signs, including placing their hand on a Bible.  It is not a legal requirement that they use a Bible and if they don't want to they are not required to do so.  It's only a commonly accepted practice.  So your question has almost no validity.

  20. u can say u dont want to, then they give u the constitution
