Verizon is different from the other networks. Using a car analogy they're using diesel cars (i.e. CDMA) only while the others have cars on gas (i.e. GSM/WCDMA). Once you have a diesel car you cannot simply decide one day to put gas on it, it simply does not work.

you could use an unlocked t-mobile fone tho

No, cinguler (at&t) uses sim cards... and Verizon doesn't... and they work on different cellular networks
