If the plural form of goose is geese, then why isn't the plural form of moose, meese?

  1. Because, my friend, that would make sense and English NEVER makes any sense. That is the beauty of the English language.


  2. I think because moose is is an Algonquin Indian word (Native American). Goose was in use in Europe, as well as its plural, and became part of the English language long before moose did.

    I live in Maine and we have a lot of moose, and I refer to their plural as meese. I started doing it as a joke as a kid and it stuck.

    Also, come to think of it - what other English word with 'oose' in it is made plural by 'eese'? Only goose. English is just plain weird.

  3. Actually, I refer to my stuffed meese, even though I know it is incorrect.

  4. Probably the same reason the plural of louse is lice, and the plural of mouse is mice, but the plural of house is houses: the english language is just plain weird. Some things you just have to accept.
