If the power is surging on and off should you unplug the fridge?

the main power to the house has been interupted and the back up generators only provide about half the power. the refridgerator

motor is cutting in and out. should it be unplugged?

  1. Yes for sure a fridge don't like power surges.

You need to disconnect the refrigerator.  Frequent starting and stopping of the motor could easily burn it out.  You could also burn out the generator.  If your generator only supplies half the power necessary you need to turn off enough appliances so you don't pull more power than the generator can supply.  Normally, a generator of this size is only connected to specific places.  The refrigerator, freezer, some lights, etc.  Make sure you're not trying to power an electric hot water heater, dryer, stove, or anything else that draws a lot of power.  With these things disconnected the generator should be able to run some lights, a radio, television, a refrigerator, and maybe a freezer.  It depends on how big the generator is.
