  1. Because there are sometimes exceptions to  rules. Besides I before E is just a little trick for kids to remember how things are spelt (usually)

  2. In its short form the rule has many common exceptions, such as species, science, sufficient (where ie follows c) or seize, weird, sovereignty, vein, feisty, kaleidoscope and neighbor (where ei is not preceded by c). More exceptions are listed below. Various augmentations to the rhyme have been proposed to handle these exceptions.

    An augmented American version is:

    i before e

    except after c

    or when sounding like "a"

    as in neighbor or weigh

There is also a more sarcastic version, which points out a couple of exceptions:

    i before e

    except after c

but we live in a weird society.

  3. and what about their

  4. Weird is pronounced as "wird"

  5. What about; vein, weigh, either, height, forfeit.... there's loads more.

  6. It is the exception to the rule - English is full of them

  7. Because it does not have a C in it.

    Pay attention.

    It's - "eye before E, except after C.

wEIrd does not have a C in it, thus the rule does not apply.

At least, that's my understanding of how English is spoke.

So how come the folk up north keep on about eee-aye addee-oh, we won the cup!  I mean, where's the eee and eye in that supposed to go then?

Yazoo Dublin - I before E except after C - all explained by simple easy to understand Celtic logic.

  8. Honey (may I call you that) all strange rules have weird exceptions.

Ignore the confusing post with the twisted logic btw.

  9. Because it is english and designed that way to make it hard for foreigners to learn.

  10. Because it's a weird word.
