If the speed limit is at most 70 mph why build cars that go 125?

Because it's OK to build a vehicle like that...Nothing says you can't...Besides, it's "s**y", "sporty", "hot."..Along with your question, why does any passenger vehicle need more than 150 hp under the hood or more than 4 gears in the transmission?..Why isn't the speedometer red-lined at 80 mph or calibrated 0-80 since the maximum posted speed limit in the US is 75 mph and that's only in 9 states?..The federal government would have to pass laws to address this issue and we know how long that will take.

No, they should be limited to the legal speed limit needed.

The reason why they are not? Because there are immature guys with small "equipment" (if you know what I mean) and think driving a powerful car makes them a big man. What it really does, it shows how small of a person they really are. They have these huge desire to create noise with cars where they go to get attention, cause they have important things missing from their lives like true self-respect.

It's a safety reason, oddly enough.

I've seen the speed limit range up to 80mph. But, if there is an emergency reason to speed up past that speed (tornado or someone chasing you) you have that ability.

i agree i always thought it was weird too. but then to overtake you have to go more than 70 and on the moterway its like 100 so then  its only like25.

To tell you the truth im not sure exactly why. I think maybe its to do with distinguishing their product from others in the same niche, but with lower grade cars i am not sure.

It is very simple,

(1) people always will push the envelope.

(2) Vehicle manufacturers don't really care.

(3) Speed sells cars.

Because to much is never enough. Take it from someone that drives equipment that is  governed at 68. It becomes a safety issue when you catch up to someone going 65. It takes forever to get around them and causes a backup of traffic because you need so much room. The extra speed is just needed at times.But 125 is a bit much.

Because nobody would buy a car that only goes up to 70mph. Manufacturers are already requried to limit the maximum speed of vehicles in the U.S.
