If the sun ceased to be how long would it take the Earth to die ?

I would like scientific info on how fast the earth would freeze, how fast life would die, what would happen with a change in gravitational pull, and would the heat of the earth's core hold up without the sun for more than a day?

  1. if it didnt explode. or swell probably in a very short time 3-6 weeks...but i dont beleve that with human intervention it would die so soon we are a very resourceful race.

  2. My guess is that the earth would drop about 30 degrees per day.  What happens at night?  The temperature doesn't drop that much during the absents of the sun. I think after two days everywhere on earth would be freezing. The earth would no longer be traveling in a circle around the sun, it would be traveling in a straight line, but still rotating.  The tides would change and probably become larger because they would only be shifted by the moon and not counter shifted by the gravitation of the sun. I think after the earth reached -100 F after probably 6 days most of the human life would have trouble staying alive.  The difference in temperatures would probably cause the high winds.  The next 3 days would probably kill everything on earth except ocean life, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and Osama Bin Laden.  Not sure how long they would last.  The ocean would begin freezing.  The Ocean would probably become completely frozen after 5 weeks.  the temperature would take 2 and a half weeks about 17  days to reach -450F or near 10 degrees above absolute 0.  I don't think that anything would happen to the Earth's core.  The temperature above the surface would only be able to go down 500 degrees F while the core is below up to miles of ocean and thousands of miles of Earth to the core.  The core would probably last thousands of years.  Just my opinion, not too scientific.

  3. probably a few seconds or minutes...idk

  4. if the sun died, it would take about 8minutes and 25 seconds for the light from the Novae to reach us.

  5. the earth would be incinerated by the sun before it nova'ed, we would all die a slow burning death.

  6. Around 8 minutes, some odd seconds.  That's the time it takes for light to travel from the sun to earth.  If the sun had a supernova, perhaps the burning death would come slightly sooner...but I think your question is what if it just DIDN'T exist anymore??  That's a really good question, but I think we'd have a good amount of time.  You have to consider the fact that plants make oxygen for us, so once they die, that sucks.  The sun also helps our bodies create vitamin D from cholesterol, but so do other sources, so I don't think sickness from malnutrition would kill us.  People may kill other people...chaos, etc.  I really think you have a good question...sorry I couldn't answer really...guess I shouldn't have tried

  7. If that were to happen, we would not be alive long enough to see the sun disappear, because the heat from the extreme brightness of the sun would kill all life forms.

  8. Dont start a 401K program at the office.

  9. A VERY SHORT TIME IF THE SUN EXPLOADED. ABOUT A ICEAGE OF TIME IF IT DISAPEARED OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT

  10. Once the Sun uses all of its hydrogen fuel, it'll become 100 times brighter and bigger, as a result it will consume and engulf planets close to it (including earth), then become a supernova. But lucky for us, that won't happen any time soon - about a billion years or so.
