  1. It totally depends on the nature and location of the crack.  Many transoms on older wooden boats were planks.  On boats powered by an outboard, it was not unusual to see a crack above the water line.  In this instance, structural integrity is the concern more so than water tightness.

If you can't determine the severity of the crack you must get at least one educated opinion.  It may be nothing or it may be destruction.

  2. Yes it can be fixed>$$$

  3. As humourous as it would be to see a transom detach from a hull and continue accelerrating by engine power... it's unlikely that I'll be there to see it so heres the scoop:

Take a photo and post it if you want a true opinion, even then its difficult to know without physically assessing the crack. Check the other side of the transom. If the crack goes the whole way through your in a little trouble and it's certainly time to call in the pro's. Use some sandpaper, a dremel or a grinder to grind back the crack sharply, and figure out how deep it is. Do not grind in a wide area or you will replace your crack with a major hole..

Above below waterline doesn't truly matter as it need to be watertight either way. Give us more info on what the transom is made of etc and a photo for a detailed evalutation.

  4. Anything can be fixed.

From the keel to the tip of the mast.
