  1. It was whatever you believe it to be, really. You can't know what was there before the Universe existed. The only way to know is if you were omniscient.

  2. Brady has a good answer in that nobody knows but if superstring theory is proved to be the true TOE (Theory of Everything) scientists may have an answer to how our universe was created. Although if it is correct then the multiverse may as well exist and we could be just one universe in a array of infinite universes... now answer how those were created, and the cycle continues.

If you are interested in superstring theory I suggest you watch Nova's The Elegant Universe, it's very interesting and very strange. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/pro...

  3.   If some thing is infinite it has no beginning and no end.

A string of infinite length can't have an end to it.

The universe is finite, there was nothing before it existed except a potential that became the universe.

  4. The answer is either nothing, or nobody knows.

As of now, the laws of physics as we know them break down when we look back at the universe when it was very young.  When the universe was just formed or created, it was very small and very hot.  Under those conditions, our laws of physics (general relativity and quantum mechanics) break down and can no longer describe our universe.  Scientifically, we have no way of really knowing what was going on even in the young (very young) universe, let alone what happened before it was even formed/created.

If string theory proves to be true, then scientists may be able to answer your question.  But as of now, it remains in the realm of philosophy and religion.

  5. No body is sure.

  6. Nobody is sure, that it is infinite. It could be infinite. We have no evidence to show that something is infinite. We have only a way to show that something is not infinite.

To quote Einstein: Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

  7. Yes, the answer is - NOTHING. Dont trouble youself with these thoughts. I personally believe that our universe is a molecule to some other substance. Maybe the big bang was a nuclear fission, where stras (Protons) and planets (Electrons) spread out. Then it formed smaller molecules - solar systems with stars as the nucleus and planets as electrons. Got it? If you feel puzzeled, then just enjoy life as it is.

  8. vacuum perhaps ..... eh ... like in my head....
