  1. Gen. Giap planned the assault on Bien Dien Phu and was Ho's hero for defeating the French. By mid 1967 there were combat troops from S. Korea, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and the US. The Philippines provided some non-combatants too. The north had lost 2 full generations of men  due to the the allies tossing in. TET 68 was his plan to make 1 last big charge. the planning began in late summer 67. The idea was they would use the VC along with a smaller force of NVA. The hope was they would cause a popular uprising to their side. It backfired. The VC were now known to their neighbors, the massacre in Hue City hit hard on the south. ARVN was overwhelmed with volunteers to fight the communists. The Communists did not achieve 1 single military objective and were in full retreat to Cambodia and Laos when Walter (what an azz I am ) Chronkite claimed the war was lost.  Gen Giap was fired and amazed he was getting credit for winning while in retreat. The movement here won, via the missteps of the press. After the Paris accords were signed the north began to rebuild it's Army. In 1974 they tested President Ford and our Dem lead Congress by means of a small incursion. When our Congress decided the south was on it's own the north came full force knowing the US would sit on it's big fat butt and do nothing.

That's the long version of "It was won before we left"

    SSG US Army 73-82

Been spit on, called a "baby killer", slapped and spit at..they missed. All that and I was never there!

  2. liberals and congress were the reason we left. we would have won.

  3. those stupid liberals turned america against its troops. i know vietnam vets who said after getting home they had people spit on them. i swear to god if somebody did that to me i would have killed them. ungrateful bast@rds.

  4. Considering that it was a vastly unpopular and undeclared war the fact that it lasted so long speaks to the Federal Governments enormous power to impose its' will upon the populace- and even way more so now. The way that it was fought it could have lasted 10 more years or longer as the Oriental soldier is a formidable enemy who does not surrender easily. And after all what would we have 'won' if we had stayed? Later on the Vietnamese fought their Chinese benefactors anyway. More non liberals were against the war in its' final stages than lib's.

  5. the war lasted longer than it should have.   we won every major battle exept two and the two we lost could not be overcome.   we lost in the american congress and we lost to the electronic media.   The worst thing that scared the nva was our bombers dropping their bomb loads from 40,000 ft.   they couldn't get out of the way of the bombs.  those of us that fought in the war new would could win given the go ahead from congress and the media.   mr  doodles

  6. Colonel Tin indicated that we had defeated his forces militarily.  The only reason they continued the fight is that John Kerry, Jane Fonda and others were working hard to demoralize the American People and get America to quit.  Without that hope, it seems clear from Tin's words that we already had the victory in the bag.
