for example I know mexicans have a certain asian look to them because they are descendants of natives of the americas (aztecs and mayans) who migrated from asia during the ice age, so mexicans are technically mongoloid or asiatic.

but what about hispanics like from columbia? what about J lo.... would she be a caucasian of mediterranean origin like italians?

what about sammy sossa? he looks black, so ie he tecnically negr oid?

  1. The guy who said there are 5 groups and listed them is absolutely correct except they ommited one group which accounts for some populations in Eastern Europe, So basicaly just listen to that guy. Anyhow Hispanics generally refer to either a LOOSELY defined group of people coming from central america who are of mixed spanish and native ancestry.

  2. Hispanics are a blended people, a mix of European, African and a fair bit of native American. Really, they don't fit into any of the race categories as they have ancestry from three continents, and race is really about what continent your ancient ancestors came from. As far as they US census is concerned they come into the 'white/Caucasian' category.

  3. hispanic relates to language and culture. People who are hispanic regardless of national origin share language and cultural traits. So a decendent of Germans who lives in Brazil with blue eyes and fair skin would be a hispanic. Same with a decendent of an african slave who resides in Brazil.

I would challenge the assertion that there are only 3 groups. The 4th group is brown and includes the middle eastern peoples which includes india. I think currently they are included as caucasian.  But really stand apart with strong phenotypical traits.

  4. Hispanic is not a race, it's culture made up different races and mixtures that all have a common link, the Spanish Language.  The term "Hispanic" didn't even exist until the 1980 U.S. census when it became obvious that people from Spanish speaking backgrounds were ethnically and culturally very diverse.  When Columbus claimed the new world for Spain, there was only only one race here,... Native Americans.  Some of the Spanish explorers and settlers that followed, eventually mixed with the Native Americans and the Mestizo (European mixed with Indian) race was born.  The Spaniards and the Portuguese   imported African slaves to work on the sugar and tobacco plantations of the Carri bean and Brazil.  Eventually there was some mixing and Mulatto race was born.  However, there are still many Spanish speakers in the U.S. and Latin America whose ancestors never mixed and are of pure European Spanish descent and are are therefore, Caucasian.

  5. Hispanics are Caucasians.  Race is determined by skeletal structure not skin color.

  6. Caucasians, so are people from the Indian sub-continent

  7. Genetic studies actually divide human DNA into 5 major groups:

    Neegroid

    Caucasoid

    Mongoloid

    Astraloid

    Native American

Hispanic/Mexicans would fall somewhere between Native American, Caucasoid, Mongoloid and Neegroid!
