If there are any vets here,how much food should my puppy be eating now? He is 28 lbs. How many cups food? ?

I am feeding him something called Royal Canine, and was told to feed him about a cup per serving twice a day. He is a Golden Retriever, and is eating large breed puppy food. But he has grown a bit since we got him, and I wasn't sure what to feed him as the bag calls for an amount for dogs 50 pounds and up, and he isnt here yet. Thanks to all!

Read the label on the food you are feeding the dog, it will tell how much to give.

Usually the quantity your dog will need would be listed on the dog food bag.  Have you looked it over really well?  If it's not there, I'm sure you could find it on the food brand's website.

On the back of the bag, there are weight charts some tell by breed others by weight. It varies food to food.

Your dog needs about 800 Calories per day.  Foods vary wildly in nutritional content...you need to check the back of the bag for feeding instructions-they're pretty accurate...start with what the bag recommends, and adjust down if your dog starts gaining weight and up if he starts losing.

Amy, there are many Ask a Vet websites out there.  The amount to feed a dog varies.  Sometimes two dogs of the same s*x and size, say 2 brothers, will require different amounts of food.  Most dog foods have general guidelines printed on the packaging.  You can start with that amount.  Then, if your gets pudgy, cut back.  If it gets thinner, add more.  Puppies eat more for their size than do adult dogs, because they are growing.  Puppy food has feeding guidelines on the package, too.  Some people use the 20 minute plan.  That means that the dog is allowed to eat all s/he wants per meal for 20 minutes, then the food us taken away.  If you feed your dog canned food, the 20 minute plan is good to use because canned food can spoil, especially in warm weather, and make your dog sick.  I wish I could tell you exactly how much to feed your dog but no one can without knowing a whole lot more, sorry.

My 90 pound St mix eats 1 cup in the morning and 1 at night. My Dachshund (a miniature red) gets a half cup per feeding.

No  puppy (or  any small dog) shouldn't have anymore than 1 cup at each feeding and that is going to be pushing it for them.

BTW Feeding them 3 cups let alone 3 and half is a bad bad idea. You're setting up your dog for a  MAJOR weight issue. Remember that 15 extra pounds on a dog is like 30 on a person.

Best thing to do is check with your vet about what he should be eating and how much.

A good amount, without overfeeding, would be 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at night..if you notice him gaining too much weight, you can reduce it slightly.

if it is puppy food- it should say on the bag

usually, puppies will only eat when they are hungry because of their attention span--if thats the case, just leave the food out.

but I would say feed him anywhere between 2-3.5 cups. In time you will find out how much it takes to fill him up and how much it take to keep him at a healthy weight

Amount of food given depends on many things. What brand of food are you feeding? Different brands have different levels of nutrients and need to be fed in different amounts. How active is he? More active dogs need more food. What breed is he? Larger breed puppies need more food than smaller breeds.

well it kind of depends on what kind of dog he is. We feed our dogs about 2 cups of dog food and we split a packet of wet dog food between them and we do that about twice a day. If your dog is 28 pounds then you could probably feed him about 2 1/2 cups to 3 cups for your dog. Hope I helped! Good Luck!
