If there are no rock units to correlate on either side of the fault how to determine hanging wall movement.?

  1. You might have to look at fossil content.  If you can tell the older from the younger fossils, you can get at it that way.  Slickensides might also help, but those generally will tell you only the orientation of the motion unless you can readily identify "start" and "stop" indicators.
