I've heard of many many ways to ensure having a baby boy or baby girl. My question is , however, do doctors have ways to conceive twins, triplets, etc...?

Anyone ever heard?

Just wondering, randomly..

  1. When it comes to twins, it's more up to mother nature than anything a doctor can do.

When it comes to s*x, it's always possible to use IVF, and test each embryo before hand to ensure only one particular s*x of embryo is returned to the woman.

But the part of IVF that doctor's having figured out how to improve is implantation.  The embryo still has to implant and grow in the uterus, and doctor's have not found a reliable way of ensuring this happens.

So in the real world of IVF, the typical woman is given two embryo's in the hopes that at least one of them will implant.  For older women, as many as three embryo's will be used in the hopes that just one will implant.  Of course sometimes all of them manage to implant and these women wind up with twins/triplets, but that isn't the norm.

So basically, when you consider the fact that twins are already a health concern, anything over twins becomes a MAJOR health concern.  Since you basically have to risk quads and above to expect to achieve twins, it would be medically reckless for a doctor to intentinally attempt to produce twins.

The closest thing to an exception that might happen would be a doctor performing IVF possibly using up to three embryo's if a woman insisted he try to help her have twins.  But even then, twins are no guarantee, with the danger of triples (and even higher).

Consider this story: A woman underwent IVF treatments and the doctor only inserted two embryos.  But the woman gave birth to triplets.  It was determined that one of the embryo's split after insertion and she gave birth to one set of identical twins plus the third fraternal twin.

  2. There is no way to insure a boy or girl ... unless you plan to abort fetuses of the non-desired s*x or have a complex procedure where sperm are separated out and a single sperm is injected directly into the egg.

Nor is there any way to guarantee multiples, and no good doctor would do anything to increase the odds of multiples. (When women have fertility  treatments/in-vitro, the doctor does everything possible to REDUCE the odds of multiples, since one healthy baby is always preferable to multiple micro-premies.

  3. Maybe by surgical implantation or something along those lines. There is really nothing that can be done to ensure that you have a certain s*x baby or multiple babies. That's why having a baby is one of life's great surprises!

  4. Yeah Invitro. Just go in and tell the dr you want 5 eggs implanted in you and you may have twins/trips.

  5. You can never ensure through natural methods of having either s*x or multiples. There are things you can do to supposedly increase the chances however. And multiple births are more likely in the event of fertility treatments.

  6. my grandmas says do it 2x in one night lol .
