  1. I have a test on this tomorrow it is the facial nerve.

  2. Salivary secretion is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system often have antagonistic actions, but in the control of salivation they act in a complementary manner. Activation of the parasympathetic nerves (CRANIAL NERVE IX & FACIAL VII) elicits large volumes of a watery salivary secretion containing ions and enzymes; stimulation of the sympathetic nerves produces small amounts of saliva that is rich in proteins. The composition of saliva thus varies with the balance of activity in the autonomic nerves controlling salivary secretion.

Glossopharyngeal IX: a mixed nerve responsible for swallowing (contraction of pharynx), taste, secretion of saliva, and for the reflex regulation of blood pressure, cardiac, and respiratory reflexes. It supplies Parasympathetic input to the parotid gland (salivary gland).

Facial VII carries Parasymapathetic input to the salivary glands.

  3. The parasympathetic branch of the 7th cranial nerve carries innervation to the salivary glands including the submandibular and the parotid glands.  This is considered the visceral motor (efferent) branch of the facial nerve.

  4. The glossophayngeal (CN IX)
