If there is a war with Iran, will the draft have to be reinstated?

Everyone is quick to point out that it's the Democrats who want to bring back the draft. but isn't it a reality that if we expand our military presence further, we will not have the manpower to support it with a volunteer force? Especially against an enemy as well equipped and supported (by the Russians) as Iran?

Democrats like Charlie Rangel see the current volunteer army as an unfair burden on the poor in this country who have fewer career choices than the rich and well educated.

The fact of the matter is, if we even think about a war with Iran, we had better be ready for World War 3. And we aren't going to be prepared with an all volunteer army.

And for those who think such a war is not possible, see the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytzWNJlAk-k

  1. Using MSNBC as a source for what McCain is saying is like using FoxNews to explain Obama.  MSNBC is highly biased.

I don't understand Rangel's position on this issue.  The military is a good career choice for those that have few choices because of a lack of education.  They can receive job training with good pay and if they make it a career the opportunity for early retirement is there.  I would think that instead of complaining about it being unfair he would be trying to increase benefits and opportunities to attract more people.

The draft will only be reinstated if we are in a major long-term conflict.  The military will try to keep to all volunteer as long as possible.  The draft caused more problems with people defecting and going awol.  They will increase benefits and reduce terms of enlistment to attract people first.

  2. You tube is never a viable link to prove a point. Our military is strong enough and it is voluntary.  I served my country and proud of it.

  3. The united states will never see another draft. You get far more effective soldiers by manipulating the attitude, perception, and opportunities of the consumer to get them to enlist.

  4. Well Iran's proxy fighters are more dangerous than her Revolutionary Guard in my opinion, attacking Iran will do damage inside of western countries, it will not be pretty and God willing it doesn't happen.

  5. I know I'm not religious but it's things like this that make me want to pray.

  6. I think Russia is far biggest issue than Iran.  U.S. will only step in Iran if Iran try to take control Iraq.

  7. Yes, McCain has alluded to it but can't come out and admit the truth about a draft because it would be political suicide.

I hope he doesn't make our drafted sons and daughters climb through the trash heap to find armor to weld on to their Humvees.  He emulates Bush in every other way, so I would not put it past him.

  8. as long as it is just them po folk that make under $5 million and only own one housse are the ones Drafted~!

  9. I think a small voluntary professional army which can handle more peaceful periods and special operations is feasible.  Wars on a large scale alter life styles in many ways.  The stockpile of veterans from WWII and Viet Nam is gone.  The 1960s and Viet Nam altered the idea of the government's right to make war.  Military families like the McCains have changed too as John has demonstrated in his own careless life. A draft would be a referendum on support for any war.  Bush's invasion of Iraq has altered the public awareness of the costs of war in a new generation.  Sadly the influence and cooperation in the UN seems to be ending.

After all this I think it would take a modern equivalent of Pearl Harbor in the context of worldwide aggression to get public support for war.

Louis S:  You're attitude will get you a FEW well-placed nukes in this country.  Are you ready for that.  You sound like a fighter who expects to fight without getting hit or hurt.

  10. The myth of the military as a "Burden on the Poor" was disproved Long ago...but is kept alive by liberals trying to scare their base (Like you) with the draft.

Guess that's why the branches are meeting and exceeding their goals...

Also when you put you tube as a source you lost a lot of credibility beyond the Moveon.org cut and paste

  11. No.

  12. One carefully placed nuke would do the trick.

  13. yes but there is no point fighting them if they have Nuclear Weapons

  14. Because of the military might of Iran, because our forces are already stretched thin, there is almost a definite chance there will be a draft. The fact is, although most military enlistees come from lower and middle class backgrounds, there are many wealthy people who join (our very own senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota has a son in the military.)

  15. well i am glad you got one thing right, and that is that is the dems who have always done the draft in the past.  Draft WWII and in Vietnam both dem initiatives.  but putting that aside you can put fears to rest.

no there will not be a draft - military does not want a draft.  The only way their would be a draft is if we were in danger of being invaded.

  16. I personally feel that doing away with the draft was detrimental to the country. Since the draft ended, jobs that would normally be held by US trained veterans are going overseas. Now you have barrios and ghettos full of unskilled criminals when those citizens could have been saved by a draft. Just my opinion....and I'm a democrat.

  17. We're not going to be doing any marching around Iran.

    Quick flyovers, boom, boom, boom.

    Done.

  18. Yes, US Youth will be a fertile ground for us.

  19. That would be a tragedy to have to start a draft....It should be pretty clear that if he does get voted in, this situation will get ugly. If no draft, than the soldiers that have served an enormous amount of time already will be faced with even more.

Thank God for them and I wish our soldiers the best. BUT I would like to see them be able to stay home, here on US ground for awhile....those with families and such....[sigh]

Youtube may not be CNN, but some of these clips you can't just fake...

  20. I think reinstating the draft would provoke such a backlash that the government would be pressured to de-escalate any conflict. Remember, the kids being drafted are the sons and daughters of those who came of age in the 60's and 70's.
