  1. I don't think that there will be a draft because I don't think we'll go to war with Iran, but who knows... and dylan if were only using 2% of our troops how come some people have served multiple tours and current tours getting extended.

  2. I think so. We are spread so thin already.

  3. Highly unlikely in my opinion.

With modern technology, we can now have 'surgical strikes', which minimize the loss of life to innocent civilians.

Although innocent casualties can never be completely avoided, we try to do the best we can to minimize that happening.

The largest deterrent to a nuclear war has been the weapons themselves, and the knowledge of what they are capable of.

No country should be deprived of developing nuclear energy for power production.

The problem is that the same technology can be used to develop nuclear weapons.

If that technology is used for the wrong purposes in the hands of a 'mad man', that is where it becomes a problem.

Until recently, these countries were never a real threat, (North Korea, Iran) since they did not have the delivery capabilities of long range missiles.

Both have recently been 'Flexing their muscles' lately, and the leaders of both countries seem to be dangerous, (and possibly mad).

Anyone who has complete control, and is determined to destroy another society, is someone to be concerned about!

I do have to wonder, how much of this is actually a 'backlash' response to 'Western world policies and paranoia'!

I know that there is never any way of talking any sense to a 'Mad Man', but if there is no attempt to talk, no progress can ever be made.

On the brighter side, even if one of these rogue regimes actually launched a nuclear weapon, the accuracy of its delivery on a given target would be very poor.

Even if there were to be a nuclear response to a 'first strike', it would not lead to a 'Nuclear Winter'.

The entire 'WAR' would be over within hours.(My opinion).

I honestly hope that it will never come to that extent, since millions of innocent lives will be lost in the process.

  4. War with Iran would not be an occupation-Iraqi style operation, so no there would be no draft.  Even if they attacked us by proxy on our own soil, we would most likely use tactical nukes on them before deciding on ground invasion.

War with Iran will attempt to put a new regime in power, severely cripple the nuclear program, and ensure the flow of oil remains under control.  If we can get a few extra contracts out of it, double bonus.

If we do not get the support immidiately from a new regime with the actual support of the population, the airstrikes we and Israel will have unleashed will result in only creating an irriversable permanent foe out of the Iranian people.  Should this happen, Iraq and Afghanistan will implode, and we will in the end have to come back home no different than when we came back from Saigon.

Without a nuclear type attack on American soil, a draft would never happen.  How many soldiers would even be in Iraq if the army was trully a volunteer force and no one got paid?  Forcing people to occupy Iranian ports is not going to happen...

  5. The military is already broken, so if we HAD to go to war, there would be a draft.  Maybe Bush will orchestrate some fake pearl harbor thing to get america behind it.  Watch out.

  6. Don't be daft like the first poster. It takes years to develop a draft and the organization to deal with it. It would take many more years to figure out how to train the draftees. And we'd have to reorganize our military doctrine. Practical considerations make it impossible in the near future, even if there were overwhelming support to make it so.

    This is not 1940.

The "we are spread thin" argument is one against, not for, a draft. Where would we get the drill instructors?

  7. The military is not broken, and no there will not be a draft.

  8. No, there will be no draft.  Only 2% of our troops are in Iraq, if that puts it into perspective for you.
