I have a 1990 90 hp yamaha outboard, that seems to only run the first time we start it. After that if we turn it off it doesnt start again. We changed that AC rec. spark plugs, water pump and still the same. What could it possily be?

  1. hi there... it could be many things..

Join iboats.com they have experts on there who will help you.

    Questions for you

1, does the boat start again after you have run it at home on muffs .

2, do you know how long ago the carbs were cleaned.

3, do you smell gas at the engine when it wont start??

4, have you removed the spark plug when it wont run and checked for a spark?

5, have you checked the fuel pump  it may only be working when you prime the engine.

6, does the engine try to start whenyou crank it or just wurrs with the starter??

7, does it actually pump water out the  tell tale or pee pee when you start it??

  2. No offense, but it doesn't sound like you know enough about motors to try to fix it yourself.  I would get a real mechanic to take a look, or you'll just be wasting money and changing good parts, like you've already done!

The first thing I would have looked at is the choke.  A faulty choke sometimes starts up cold, then doesn't start when its warm, and sometimes the opposite.  It will start quickly when it's warm, and hard to start when its cold.

Check the choke, and next I would check the carb.

  3. Check your fuel lines and check the relief valve on the tank.

If the valve is bad it could be forming a vacuum preventing the fuel from being sucked through the fuel lines.

  4. It is probably the ignition coil. I had that problem once.
