If there is no mass transit, is there a cheaper way to get to a train station than a cab? provided it is not?

  2. If it's just barely not in walkign distance, a bike is a good bet, and some decent exercise to boot.

    Other than that, put up some flyers in the neighborhood and try to organize, or slip into an existing, carpool.  Most peopel would be happy to provide a ride in exchange for gas money, as long as they are heading that direction anyway.
