If there was a death in an apt or home are the future tenants told?

I was just curious after watching some crime docs and noticed a lot of deaths occured in rentals. It got me wondering could I be living in a place where someone died and not know it? Is it illegal for the landlord not to disclose that? I know this is a morbid subject but I'm just very curious. Thanks

  1. No they don't have to.  


  2. They are not required to disclose this. In some places they might be required to disclose this to a buyer but not to a renter.

    Most states require a seller to disclose anything to a buyer that would materially affect the property being sold. This issue is often a matter of interpretation.

    You could always take a black light with you when viewing a prospective apartment.

    On the serious side, my wife is a widow, her husband accidentally shot himself in their apartment. There are professional companies that do cleanup for this sort of this so it normally won't affect the next tenant.

  3. You have to specifically ask that question to the landlord. If the landlord did not specifically ask when they purchased the home, chances are they would not know either.

  4. Given  the  mortality  issue  with  humans ,

    Most  places  have  had  someone  die  there  unless  it's  a  very  new  place .

    The  landlord  is  Not  required  to  disclose  but  may  wish  to  if  an  undesirable  applies  and  they  want  to  discourage  them .

  5. I doubt that any state requires a landlord to disclose if someone previously died in a home.  A lot of people die from natural causes or accidents in their homes.  


  6. Nope it's not a material fact.  Especially in rentals they do not need to disclose that fact, along with the sale of a home, it's not relevent and does not need to be disclosed.
