if there was ever a global disaster, what should N.E U.S. expect?im from VT northwest vermont, im just thinkin what should we expect for natural disaster?i dont beleive we are on fault lines or volcanoes.we are a way away from the ocean.we have a smallish lake.we live in a valley so tornadoes i dont think are much worry, thats what we were taught anyway.im just wondering with pole shift comin up what should one in this area expect?wether you beleive in pole shift or not, weather wise if things get bad what shoudl this area expect?

  1. There are faults under VT and NH.  There could be a big quake, but it is unlikely.  Volcanic activity is not likely.  A shift in climate could lead to more storms/flooding/severe wind and hail, particularly if you are in a valley.  A big impact could also be an increase in snow/winter time.  This could lead to a shorter growing season.  A shift in climate could also lead to a drought.

  2. Two global disasters that could hit the US with little warning, and specifically N.E. USA; asteroid strike in the Atlantic or a mega-tsunami caused by the volcano Cumbre Vieja in the Canaries erupting and collapsing into the sea. If you are in a valley, you could be low enough to be hit by either of these.

On a slightly longer timescale, some people think that Global Warming or something else (maybe changes in the sun) could trigger an ice age (global warming could cause an over-correction). In which case, Vermont could end up under half a mile of ice - and some people think that ice ages start quite suddenly.

There are also a few global disasters that will affect everyone or close to it - sun super-flare causing destruction of electrical and electronic equipment over pretty well the whole globe; a gamma-ray burst close up that would sterilise the entire Solar System with gamma rays; global pandemic; nanotech "grey goo" outbreak (not for another decade or two!); global thermonuclear war; alien invasion; super-volcano eruption in Yellowstone. I'm sure there are others - and there isn't much anyone can do about most of them.

If you must worry, and you want to do something about it, then perhaps the ones that something can be done about are asteroid strike, nuclear war and global warming. Maybe the nanotech plague, too.

It's quite easy to stop yourself sleeping at night, if you insist on thinking about stuff like this. Don't. Unless you're planning on doing something about the stuff you can do something about.
