and the maple leafs got sent to the ahl, there will be two toronto teams

1) do you think it's a good idea, relegation. could it work in the nhl.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promotion_and_relegation

2) leafs vs leafs who would win (me personally i'm going to pick the st. john's maple leafs :P)

and the biggest question of all

3) DO YOU THINK IT WOULD GET MLSE TO WISE THE HECK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!

if not explain why. do you think they're handcuffed by the uber greedy OTTP (ontario teachers pension plan. respect for all the teachers!)

4) also of all the bottom feeder teams who do you think should get relegated, right along with the leafs. give a good enough reason.

'08 bottoms

Tampa Bay Lightning-71 pts

Los Angeles Kings-71 pts

Atlanta thrashers-76 pts

St. Louis Blues-79 pts

New York Islanders-79 pts

Columbus Blue Jackets-80 pts

Toronto Maple Leafs-83 pts

Phoenix Coyotes-83 pts

Florida Panthers-85 pts (i can't believe the panthers got more points than tml's)

  1. It just wont happen so.............

  2. If they did do relegation, it would have to be by rank. And the Leafs would not be relegated... you would only take bottom 5 at most.

Would never happen though. The NHL is set up completely for the current system. Draft, everything. Travel, fan support. There aren't enough cities that could support an NHL team in the AHL. you could get a city like Hershey with and NHL team.

Relegation and such works great in European soccer where there's no cap so it's not as competitive- I mean, look at the fleyrs this year- And where there are a lot of places with the fan support to make it work.

  3. No they don't.

    1. I don't think it would be a good idea.

    2. The audience would die from watching c**p.

    3. I think you missed a couple words there.  I couldn't understand the question.

    4. LA hasn't been good since Gretzky left.

    Atlanta shouldn't have that team.

    Phoenix should be in Winnipeg.

    Florida should not exist.

  4. I love the idea of relegation. However, the prospective relegated league needs to operate independently from the league where the castoffs come from.

Therefore, as long as AHL squads are affiliated with NHL teams, the system cannot adopt that protocol.

  5. 1. Relegation would work if the NHL per se were split into two leagues. The relegation would occur between the two leagues. There would be inter league play and a playoff including qualifiers from both leagues.

    2. The St. John's Maple Leafs are long gone. They are now the Marlies.

    3. The OTPP are not the problem with MLSE. The problem is with the individuals who run the organization.  Larry and Richard have too much say in the running of the hockey club. The investors as with all NHL owners are in business to earn a living. If Detroit Red Wings weren't making money for Mr. Ilitch I don't think he'd be around very long. That is why there are continual turnovers in the bottom feeders. They are losing money and the Toronto Cash Cow can't continue to bail them out.

    4. Under the two division process 6 of the above identified teams would gravitate toward the bottom because of continual ineptitude. Toronto finishing out of the playoffs for three years only will right itself and be back in the upper echelon. Remember even though Toronto hasn't won in 41 years Chicago hasn't won in 47. There are 13 teams that have never won and 4 that have only won once. So Toronto is not as bad as the others would have you believe.

  6. Then we would be like Soccer and have ties also!  LOL... as you can tell, I have never really gotten into Soccer..I have a friend that played pro and I gave it a try and I just couldnt feel it.

Nothing will help MLSE, until the OTPF is not the owners. Pro Sports is not an investment anymore. You need a die hard owner willing to do whatever it takes to WIN, even if that means break even or lose a few bucks for a year or two. And that isnt happening with the OTPF. Even the PREDS went all out to win it LAST YEAR and lost money. But atleast they went for it.

  7. While I think it works in soccer, I don't think it would work in hockey.  There are so many more teams in european football, and they have more levels.  The NHL and AHL are related, but they're farm teams and work on developing players, which is different than the levels in soccer.

Also, there is a lot of mobility in the NHL.  Last year, the Flyers finished last overall.  If there was a relegation system, they would be sent down... but instead, they stayed, and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals.  Pittsburgh was last overall two years ago, and was the other ECF team (and is in the cup finals now).

While I really like the system in european football, (it gives teams something to fight for besides pride), I think there is a lot more mobility in hockey and teams don't stay bottom-feeders for very long.  (Especially now, with the salary cap.)

I think the current leafs could beat either the marlies or the st. johns leafs. :).  And I think the bottom 2 teams would be relegated... so LA and TB.  Luckily, it's one from each conference this year.
