If there were tornadoes all around the city you live in and the sirens were blazing what would you do?

Today there were tornadoes on each side of the city where I live and then the sirens went off, so then my husband put our four kids in the van and told me to get to a shelter and leave him there at our home that obviously does not have a basement. He wanted to stay there because he was waiting for his ride to work. This brings me to the question of what would you do leave him there in the middle of the tornadoes or stay with him until his ride arrived? By the way I stayed with him until his ride arrived and as you can see we are all ok.

  1. You both were wrong!

    The sirens going off mean there is a tornado spotted nearby.   You are in immediate danger.    A vehicle is not a safe place to be.    Sitting on the porch or yard argueing about what to do is not wise either.

    You should have a designated room in the house for an emergency shelter.  Pick one with no windows and toward the southeast corner of the house if possible.   It won't hurt to reinforce it if you wish,   line the lower walls with 3/4 plywood and an additional framework top, bottom, and corners   (this adds protection from flying objects in lesser storms and support if the house collapses over it).   Baseball players have been injured by 90 mph fastballs,  tornadoes will throw your neighbors grill and lawn furniture faster than that.

    The above is  not as safe as an underground shelter,  but more economical.   Most deaths and injuries are caused by getting struck by flying objects.   Tornados are not a storm to fool around with,   they are highly unpredictable,  skipping  and turning at a whim.

  2. dude, that is a hard-core car-pooler right there.

    i think maybe all of us would have gone to the shelter rather than all of us wait and see if his "ride to work" got to our house before the giant killer funnel cloud.  but thanks!  fun question.

  3. You didn't think it was safe for him to say so....

    you stayed also?  Do you have some anti tornado power?

    ===

    I would have driven him to his work or basically drive off.  If it isn't safe for one, it isn't any safer for two.  And besides, if anything was to happen, at least the kids would have one parent left.

    Good Luck...

    P.S.  No offense but nether of you are thinking clearly.  Think about the kids.

  4. IT  is  not  safe  to  go to shelter unless it  is  very close.  You  should  go to central  safe  area, such  as  bathroom  and  cover  up.  Keep flashlights ready at  all times,, I  also keep candel  and  matches  as  we  get hail  a  lot. And  dont  depend  too much on sirens.  Just  recently out  side Ft Worth in community called  Crowley  tornado touched  down  and  no  sirens  sounded.  Radio had  just  said  severe  storm just  minuents  before.  It  took out  6  very  large  brick homes  and  missed  about  20 others.  ALSO  keep a  batterry radio for information.  *mamatx

  5. Id run as fast as I could twords the tornado,I would love to get sucked up in the vortex of the tornado and spin around like Dorothy,I think it would be so much fun!

  6. I think I would have driven him to work myself, ( if work was a safe place to be), & then driven the kids & myself to safety. If his work wasn't safe I would've driven him & all of us to safety. His life is more important than one day missed from work. I'm glad you're all ok.

  7. wait for a ride or go with the family, thats a easy one...go with the family, you can replace the house and the work can wait but you cant replace the family........
