  1. You would be replacing the battery and starter - no savings on fuel cost or emissions.  The act of starting your car (seconds) doesn't compare to the act of running your car (minutes/hours).

  2. Of course there would be less driving.

However the cars that had hand crank engines had much smaller engines and were much lighter.

If today's cars were the same weight and similar HP, the mileage would be such that there would likely be no need for foreign oil.

  3. Hand cranking the car would just eliminate quite a number of people from driving who couldn't start their car.  What could perhaps save fuel would be to eliminate the alternator, water pump, a/c  compressor, and fan.  Or course this would not be very possible but it would help your mileage out a bit.

  4. not directly, but because people are too lazy to drive round the corner, yes.

it would also cut down the amount of female drivers, so I'm all for it  ;-)

  5. Ignore the emissions, when oil peaks (which it has already) and rises to a very uncomfortable $200 dollars a barrel (and the oil fields are still, just less than half full) no one will be able to buy it.

Hauliers won't be able to afford to get produce to the supermarket shelves or ship it overseas.

It will probably only be used for crucial, national services so you won't be getting any heating oil.

Hyper inflation ensues. The market economy will completely collapse. You will loose all your savings and your pension (because your money is almost worthless).

Even if you utilise all the alternative renewable energy sources available including nuclear power, (because they can't afford to make any new ones, that requires manufacturing, labour and transportation), they won't even scratch the surface of the power needed.

Medicine relies very heavily on oil... quit smoking and get fit and ride a bike to work.

So, forget emissions and start worrying about how you are going to feed yourself and your kids!

  6. Yes.

    1. They would keep the car in better tune to make starting easier thus saving gas.

    2.  High compression engines would only allow about 2% of the population to have the strength to start an engine.  That would save a lot of gas.

    3. It would need to be illegal for someone to sell kits, or to modify cars to automatic starting. With so many people in jail fewer would drive, saving gas.

    4.  With crank starters for jets and tanks, the use of mechanized equipment in war would end, thus saving lots of gas.
